There is often limited time to make decisions about diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis following a positive screening test result and inaccurate information about local services such as operator specific miscarriage rates for amniocentesis and the local diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound scans.

Indeed there is great variation in the structures assessed at the week Ultrasound Scan and in many centres it is combined with a Marker Scan as a screen for chromosomal abnormalities without the knowledge or consent of the pregnant women. Many tests are presented as routine and the role of the Ultrasound Scan as a test for congenital abnormality is not clear in the minds of many women who are more pre-occupied with seeing a heartbeat, finding out the sex of the baby and getting a photograph.

Since then, advice from individual health board has changed on an almost daily basis, with women in some areas now being told their partners cannot be with them during early labour or on the postnatal ward. It’s a far cry from what most couples will have been eagerly imagining and looking forward to and leaves women facing the prospect of going through much of the process alone.

You can go here to see the current position in each Welsh health board and here to see the regularly updated official advice for women. It’s just 11 days since I left work on a half day, fully expecting to see my colleagues again the following morning. Ahead of our second antenatal class we used the spring sunshine as an excuse to go to Barry Island, have a walk in the sun and, obviously, eat chips.

PET scanners work by detecting the radiation given off by a substance injected into your arm called a radiotracer as it collects in different parts of your body. In most PET scans a radiotracer called fluorodeoxyglucose FDG is used, which is similar to naturally occurring glucose a type of sugar so your body treats it in a similar way. By analysing the areas where the radiotracer does and doesn’t build up, it’s possible to work out how well certain body functions are working and identify any abnormalities.

For example, a concentration of FDG in the body’s tissues can help identify cancerous cells because cancer cells use glucose at a much faster rate than normal cells. PET scans are usually carried out on an outpatient basis. This means you won’t need to stay in hospital overnight.

The report also said the initial dating scan had been incompetently conducted and that “midwives failed to take account of Ms D’s relevant medical history”. Ruth Walker, the health board’s executive director of nursing, said what happened was “absolutely unacceptable” and that a review will be undertaken.
